Welcome to the Game III Beginner Guide

Welcome to the Game III beginner guide: motel security, key hunting basics, first-night survival, and hourly checkpoint saves in Normal mode on Steam.

First motel night — PC setup, browser basics, and early threat survival on Normal mode.

Welcome to the Game III beginner guide

Welcome to the Game III is a first-person horror simulation from Reflect Studios (Steam app 3869850, July 2026). You play Simon Zhao, trapped in a roadside motel and forced to browse 52 dark web sites for 8 hidden key hashes while 8+ physical threats and rival hackers attack your PC. This Welcome to the Game III beginner guide teaches the systems you repeat every run: motel security, key scanning, DOSCoin income, counter-hack defense, and hourly Normal mode checkpoints.

Unlike a linear adventure, progress is roguelite — site layouts, key placements, and threat timing shift between attempts. Pair this page with the walkthrough for key order, the killers guide for enemy counters, and the hacking guide for minigame controls. Verified July 22, 2026 · Steam store.

How to play Welcome to the Game III

Every Welcome to the Game III session alternates between two workspaces: Simon's motel room and the virtual PC. You browse dark web pages for key fragments, then leave the desk to listen for footsteps, fix breakers, or lock doors. Break that rhythm and killers or hackers end the run.

Think of the loop as scan → secure → spend: scan sites methodically, secure the motel when audio or camera cues spike, spend DOSCoin on DarkDrop tools before threats outpace your defenses.

  • Do01One dark web site per focused session, then physical room check
  • Do02Copy every confirmed clue before closing the browser tab
  • Do03Keep DarkDrop open in a second window for emergency buys
  • Do04Never ignore parking lot camera during first two keys

Browse → listen → react

Open the in-game browser, visit one site at a time, and check visible text, image hotspots, and HTML source (magnifier icon) before moving on. After each site, stand up, mute distractions, and scan parking lot cameras and hallway audio.

Threats do not pause while you read source code. The one-site-one-check habit prevents most early deaths.

Roguelite variance

Key hash locations, which competitor NPC races you, and threat scheduling vary between runs. Your notes file matters more than memorizing a single URL list from a video.

Normal mode hourly checkpoints let you recover from a bad key guess; 1337 mode removes that safety net — see endings.

Motel setup & security

Before hunting keys, treat Simon's motel like a bunker. Reflect Studios scatters defense interactions across the room: front and rear doors, light switches, panic button, security monitors, breaker boxes (for Tucker), laundry cart and locker hide spots (for Lucas), and peephole sightlines (Tanner punishes misuse).

First five minutes in-room

Walk the perimeter once. Locate both door locks, the panic button, camera monitor bank, and upstairs/downstairs light switches (Kidnapper counter). Test that doors actually latch — a stuck rear lock loses runs to Lucas Kumiega silently.

Open the security UI and cycle every camera feed. Parking lot coverage is mandatory before any Tanner guide scenario; hallway feeds catch Kidnapper van approaches.

Panic button and lockdown

The panic button triggers a brief lockdown sequence — use it when headlights sweep the lot or when audio cues stack. It does not make you invincible; stay off windows and peephole until cameras clear.

Pre-lock doors before long VirtMesh mining sessions. Competitors cannot steal keys from your notebook, but killers can steal your run.

Hide spots and freeze mechanics

Lucas forces the Stay Quiet minigame in the laundry cart or locker — earbuds from DarkDrop amplify footstep direction. Tucker demands you freeze in card-marked rooms when intercom music plays. Noir variants require precise turn-away counts (10s female, 5s male) on the killers guide.

Dark web browser basics

The browser is your investigation desk. 52 sites span forums, markets, red rooms, file hosts, and Deep Wiki tiers. Sites unlock over in-game time — some open only on quarter-hour marks — so the walkthrough phase table matters.

  • Do01Bookmark every new URL in the in-game notes file
  • Do02Source-check first visit before clicking every sub-link
  • Do03Track quarter-hour unlocks on a scratch timeline
  • Do04Close high-risk tabs before midnight threat spike

Finding new URLs

Start from seed links on invitation or hive pages. Follow outbound links one hop at a time; bookmark every URL even if the page looks like noise. Misleading mirror pages exist — cross-reference names with A.C.R.S. chatter or repeated phrases on progression sites.

View page source on every first visit. Key hashes routinely hide in HTML comments, alt text, or hex color strings. The magnifier icon is not optional luxury; it is core progression.

Site risk tiers

Progression sites (Hive, Invitation Portal) are low combat risk but dense with clues. High-risk sites (Red Room, hitman markets) spike threat schedules when you linger. Evidence archives feed late-game ending flags; decoy pages waste time unless you need atmosphere clues.

When a site triggers Bomb Maker, you leave the browser immediately — physical defusal happens in the motel. See killers guide Bomb Maker row.

Finding key hashes

Victory requires 8 key hashes — alphanumeric strings hidden across the dark web. Paste them into Deep Wiki tiers in order; wrong order or wrong casing fails the chain.

Key stageTypical sourceRisk
Keys 1–2Tutorial-tier forums, image hotspotsLow — Tanner only if careless
Keys 3–4Cross-site chains, source-only cluesMedium — Lucas + first hacks
Keys 5–6Deep Wiki II, VirtMesh subnetsHigh — Breather + NPC races
Keys 7–8Deep Wiki III, Wade-linked pagesExtreme — stacked threats

Where keys hide

Visible body text (often styled like flavor copy), steganography in images, source comments, chained subpages, and cross-site puzzles that only resolve after visiting two URLs. Preserve exact spacing and capitalization when copying.

Some keys gate behind VirtMesh mounts — you must hijack a specific virtual PC to reach a subnet URL. The hacking guide VirtMesh section covers mount timers.

Deep Wiki structure

Deep Wiki I, II, and III unlock sequentially. Early keys feed Claffis-style gate puzzles; mid-run keys open competitor race pages; final keys trigger ending branch dialogue with Wade's network.

Do not enter an assembled hash until the walkthrough confirms you have all eight fragments — partial submission routes to incomplete endings on the endings page.

DOSCoin, VirtMesh & A.C.R.S.

DOSCoin is the motel economy. Buy security gear, VirtMesh upgrades, NOP Sled, and hitman contracts on DarkDrop. Income streams: VirtMesh mining, successful counter-hacks with Backdoor Hack, A.C.R.S. chat tasks, and slot machines (high variance).

Income sourceWhenPriority
VirtMesh mine (WebTyk/UserJyx)First hourEssential
Backdoor counter-hack stealsAfter ~9:30 PMEssential
A.C.R.S. tasksAnytime board refreshesHigh

Slot machine (Merramun)Never early runLow / gamble

VirtMesh mining primer

Purchase VirtMesh from DarkDrop, breach PCs with the INJ3KT-R grid minigame, then choose Mount (browse that network) or Mine (passive DOSCoin). Early targets WebTyk (1.84 DOS) and UserJyx (1.80 DOS); mid-run Pheonix (4.79 DOS) and OpsHex (3.23 DOS) dominate.

Staying too long on one hijack triggers a permanent lockout for that username this run — rotate miners before the UI warns you.

A.C.R.S. task board

The A.C.R.S. chat room refreshes tasks roughly every 30 in-game minutes. Jobs include ShadowFetch URL-to-MP4 conversions, replying with formatted hashes, and hiring offensive hackers against named competitors. Rep unlocks higher-tier DarkDrop listings.

Complete one low-risk task before your first expensive sensor buy — motion sensors save more runs than cosmetic upgrades.

Counter-hack defense (summary)

Rival players and hired hackers DOS your PC starting around 9:30 PM. Five minigames rotate: K3RN3LC0MP1L3R, TOKENINE, memDEALLOCATOR, shiftSEQ, stackPUSHER. Win to keep browsing; lose DOSCoin or mounted sessions.

Full controls, firewall tiers, and build order live on the dedicated hacking guide. Minimum buy list: VirtMesh, Backdoor Hack (5 DOS), NOP Sled (15 DOS) before the first attack.

  • Do01Install Backdoor Hack before 9:30 PM
  • Do02Buy NOP Sled as panic insurance
  • Do03Practice the minigame you hate most on early weak attacks

Threat windows & audio cues

Physical threats escalate with key count and clock time. Wade never patrols the hallway but ramps hacker spend and NPC aggression — treat every late-game hack as Wade-tax.

Threat + hack overlap

The deadliest beginner state is TOKENINE on screen while Lucas knocks. NOP Sled exists for this overlap — scroll-wheel skip, then handle the killer. Earbuds help prioritize audio direction when both channels compete.

Normal vs 1337 mode

Normal mode auto-saves at hourly in-game checkpoints (Patch 1.0+). Use them before risky key submissions, Bomb Maker defusals, or Breather drone runs. 1337 mode removes checkpoints — one mistake ends the entire run and gates a separate ending trophy.

Checkpoint habits

Note the in-game clock when a save triggers. Plan browsing sprints between saves; if a checkpoint is five minutes away, delay irreversible NPC trades until after the save fires.

Manual Steam saves on top of hourly checkpoints give A/B test room for Noir timing or Bomb Maker codes without losing an hour of progress.

1337 overview

1337 increases threat frequency, tightens minigame timers, and disables hourly saves. Only attempt after a Normal clear and after reading the walkthrough threat timer table.

First hours — hour-by-hour

The opening in-game night sets habits for the entire Welcome to the Game III run. Follow this hour sketch on Normal difficulty before improvising.

Hour 0 — motel recon

Complete the motel walkthrough above, open browser seeds, buy VirtMesh + Backdoor Hack + A.C.R.S., hijack WebTyk for mining, and bookmark the first two progression URLs from the walkthrough early table.

Hour 1 — keys 1–2 + Tanner drill

Collect first two key hashes using source inspection on every page. Glance parking lot cam every site. If headlights appear, run the Tanner guide lockdown checklist before returning to the desk.

Hour 2 — 9:30 PM hack window

Purchase NOP Sled and Motion Sensor before 9:30 PM. First counter-hack minigame appears — clear manually for Backdoor payout if comfortable, NOP if a killer cue overlaps.

Lock rear door permanently before midnight; Lucas skews toward back-door attempts after key three in many seeds.

Common beginner mistakes

Most failed Welcome to the Game III runs come from process errors, not bad RNG. Fix these before blaming roguelite variance.
